Breakaway Roping

The Ranching Roots

Breakaway roping shares the same origins as tie-down roping. On working ranches, cattle frequently needed to be gently guided for sorting or vital medical care. However, sometimes the goal was simply to carefully secure the animal without the need to physically bring it to the ground. Breakaway roping developed as a great way to hone lasso skills without the physical exertion of traditional securing methods, and today it is one of the fastest and most exciting athletic events in the arena!

The Basic Rules

  • The Start and The Barrier: Just like other timed events, the horse and cowboy/cowgirl wait in a box behind a barrier string. The calf is given a head start, and if the cowboy/cowgirl leaves the box too early, a 10-second penalty is added to their time. The cowboy/cowgirl cannot attempt to loop the calf before that barrier is triggered, or they will be disqualified.
  • One Toss Only: The cowboy/cowgirl only gets one attempt to safely loop the calf. An attempt officially counts as soon as the lasso leaves the cowboy/cowgirl’s hand.
  • The “Breakaway”: Unlike tie-down roping, the cowboy/cowgirl does not dismount the horse. Instead, the end of the lasso is tied to the horse’s saddle horn with a specially designed, easily detachable string (like “Mason string”).
  • The Clean Loop: The cowboy/cowgirl must safely loop the calf cleanly around the neck, and the loop must stay in place until the rope gently releases from the saddle.
  • The Flag: The cowboy/cowgirl must attach a brightly colored, visible piece of material (like a flag or bandana) to the end of the lasso. This makes it easy for the judge to see the exact split-second the string releases and the rope safely detaches from the saddle.

How It’s Scored

  • This is strictly a timed event, and runs are often incredibly efficient, completed in just two or three seconds!
  • The clock starts the moment the barrier is released and stops the exact instant the lasso safely detaches from the saddle horn.
  • The cowboy/cowgirl has a maximum of 25 seconds to complete the event, and the fastest time cleanly through the run takes home the prize.
