Bull Riding

The Ranching Roots

Unlike bronc riding or roping, bull riding doesn’t have a direct practical application in daily ranch work. It evolved purely from the competitive spirit of cowboys/cowgirls wanting to showcase their athleticism alongside the largest, most spirited, and energetic animals on the ranch. It started as a friendly test of skill between ranch hands and turned into the ultimate rodeo spectacle!

The Basic Rules

  • The Equipment: There is no saddle here! Cowboys/cowgirls hold onto a braided “bull rope” that is carefully secured around the bull’s chest. An essential rule is that a metal bell must be attached to the bottom of the rope under the bull’s belly; if the rope doesn’t have a bell, the cowboy/cowgirl receives zero points.
  • The 8-Second Clock: The cowboy/cowgirl must stay with the spinning, energetic bull for a full 8 seconds. The official clock starts the exact moment the bull’s inner shoulder crosses the start gate.
  • The “Free Hand” Rule: Just like in the bronc riding events, the cowboy/cowgirl can only hold on with one hand. If their free hand touches the bull, their equipment, or the ground before the 8 seconds are up, they are instantly disqualified.
  • The Bullfighters: You will see dedicated individuals in the arena wearing protective vests; these are the bullfighters, or safety personnel. Their job isn’t to fight the bull, but to protect the cowboy/cowgirl after they safely dismount or separate from the animal. They gently redirect the bull’s attention so the rider can safely exit the arena.

How It’s Scored

  • Just like the bronc events, two judges score both the human and the animal athlete.
  • Each judge can award up to 25 points for the cowboy/cowgirl’s balance and control, and up to 25 points for the bull’s power, speed, and agility.
  • These scores are combined for a total possible perfect score of 100 points. The cowboy/cowgirl will receive a score as long as they hold onto any part of the rope and do not touch the ground before the whistle. The more athletic and energetic the bull’s movements, the higher the potential score!
